The following report of the Engin- j eor, Mr I). McLachlan, was read at j yesterday's nip«4ir»{? of the Masterton l County pound] ;—• Opaki Riding. Pairau Swamp and Loopline. Contract No. 240. —Formation and metalling. The contractors are making fair progress with their work;.- a 10 chains length of formation and metalling, at the junction of the roads, has been made. Northern Approach. —Contract No. 238: Formation works, etc.—Good -progress is being made considering the holidays intervened. Contract No. 237.—Building two bridges over the Waipoua River: — Nothing has been done with the contract re-let for this work, the contractor only arriving on the ground yesterday. Ruaniahanga Valley Road. (Govt. Gt.).— Constructing a 45ft culvert and embankment. I had the timber for this work delivered on the site and the building of the culvert and embankment is being executed by day labour. , Matahiwi.Road. —Twelve chains of metalling authorised by the Council at last meeting, is being carried out by day labour, the work being well on the way. . Te Whiti Riding. Te Whiti.Bridge—lt will be'"necessary to redeck the surface floor for almost the entire length; timber has been ordered for the purpose. t Tenders arc invited to close on Friday 13th instant,.-for metalling .178 chains of the Weraiti Road! This contract-will cover the unmet ailed length of above road; the metal" is specified to be taken from the recently ! acquired quarry.
Rangitumau Riding
Kaka-amu Road.—Contract No. 244. (Govt. Gt.).— Ninety chains of metalling, etc. Satisfactory progress is being made with the above contract.
Wainuioru Riding
Masterton-Waimata Road.f-Con-tract No. 241: Delivering 1500 c. yds. of metal for repairs. The above work was started last week, delay .being caused by the difficulty experienced in getting labour: Blairlogie-East Coast Road—Contract No. 243—Getting 1270 c. yds. of metal for repairs:; The contraetqr is not yet on the ground; he informs me he is .unable to get suitable labour, as yet. Brancepeth Road:—Contract No. 240a.—Twenty-one chains of formation, and 750 c. yds. of metal for repairs. This contract is well on the way towards completion. Riversdale Road.—Contract No. 229.—Fifty chains of formation and culverts, has been satisfactorily completed, a further 15 chains having, been let to the contractor (for balance of grant available, £4O) upon which there are yet some small defects to remedy.
Upper Taueru Riding,
Mangarai Road. —Contract No. 230. —77 chains of formation and culverts.—This work is well on-thf} way towards completion; the contractor was finally dressing up and putting in the culverts, on my visit of inspection last week. I.have extended the sur- ' vey a further length of 41 chains to a point near the homesteads of Messrs Carswell. arid Wilton, and purpose calling tenders for the remaining length immediately. ' Contract No. 231—Building a 71feet span bridge.—The contract' was not complete on the sth instant,' when I inspected the work, but the contractor has, however, reported, the work complete yesterday. : - Alfredton Riding. Alf redtbn-Weber Road. —Contract 1 No. 242.—Delivering 890 c. yds. of metal for repairs. Some 300 <L yds. on the Northern section have been delivered. Alfredton-Weber Road.—Tiraumea Section.—Contract. No. 245: Delivering 900 c. yds. of metal for repairs. The contractor intends to be'6'n the ground by the end of this Week, to' commence operations.
