The Hon; G. Fowlds visits the Jendlan caves and other places of interest in New South Wales, and sails for New Zealand on Saturday next. Mr J. Orchiston has been appointed Engineer-in-Chief of the Telegraph Department, on the retirement of J. K. Logan. \ Mr F. E. Nottage, G<S?e,rjiment Orchard Inspector, arrived at Masterton. yesterday, on a departmental visit.,
'/ Mrs James Jainieson, one of Palmerston North's earliest settlers, passed away at. her residence, Foxtori Line, on Sunday evening. • <•..-. Mr C. M. Berkley, advance representative for J. GV Williamson, Ltd., was in Masterton yesterday, making arrangements for the production of "The Dollar Princess" at thn Tofn Hall on Monday evening next. Mr W. Clement Cargill, formerly of the Wairarapa Star, afterwards of Patea, and bow of.Stratford; is 'at present a visitor tp Masterton. The Rev. D. Gordon, who has, for the past twenty-five years, had charge of the Presbyterian churches in the Marton district, is holding farewell services.
Mr H. D. Mullins, lately of the staff of the Auckland Post Offices arrived in Masterton yesterday, to take up a position on the staff of the local Post Office.
The death occurred at«his residence, Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon, of Mr William Frederick Parsons, a very old and respected settlor. '• He had been ill for some time, but died suddenly of heart failure.
Staff-Sergeant-Major Grant died at Invercargill, after a brief illness, on Sunday. He was operated on for appendicitis the previous day, and never rallied. Deceased, who had made all arrangements to attend the instructional camp at Wellington, had served in the South African war. He leaves a widow and one son.
Mr Robert Franks, eldest son of Mr W. H. Franks, at one time blacksmith in Carterton,and well-known throughout the Wairarapa, was married at Auckland during the closing week of the old year to Miss Jensen, of "Waihakeke. Mr and Mrs Franks will reside in Cartorton.
A very handsome'brass plate avhs attached to the front of the now organ in St. Mark's Church. Carterton, on New Year's Eve, by Mr W. Howard Booth. It bears the words: "To the glory of God, and in memory of Win, Booth, who died 'on 26th March, 1903."
The funeral of the late Mr Theophilus Easton,one of the earliest settlers in the Manawatu district, took* place at Foxton on ' Sunday afternoon. There was a very large attendance of mourners.
