THE SOLOMONS.
MISSIONARY DEPORTED.
A SEARCHING ENQUIRY
(Received Last Night, 9 o'clock.)
SYDNEY, January 9,
The Methodist Mission Board are sending Dr George Brown, a veteran missionary, to the Solomon. Islands, to inquire into the deportation.of the Rev. Mr Shackle, a Methodist missionary at the Solomon Islands, who has been deported to Ontong, Java, by order of the Resident Commissioner. Dr Brown, who leaves on Friday, states that Mr Woodford, Resident Commissioner at the Solomon Islands, wrote to the Mission Board, intimating that the Rev. Mr Shackle, who is a young probationary missionary, had done some very foolish things, compelling his removal. The Board heard nothing about the alleged flogging of the natives. Dr Brown was not inclined to believe the statement about the flogging,- nor the; statements made by. the Island traders that some 'Methodist missionaries were engaged in trading. A most searching enquiry will be made. The Board is regarding the matter as a serious one.
