SAD FATALITY.

YOUNG MAN THROWN FROM HORSE. DIES ON THE ROADSIDE. Mr J. H. Tatham, who arrived, in Masterton last evening, brought news of a sad fatality, which occurred on the main road near the Holmwood homestead, on the East Coast, between 9 o'clock on Saturday evening and 9 o'clock yesterday morning. It appears that a single man, Mr Alexander Cameron, a native of Scotland, and employed by Mr J. H. Tatham, left the homestead soon after tea on Saturday, on a visit to one of the roadmen". He was expected to return at about nine o'clock, but his non-arrival did not cause any anxiety, as it was thought he had stayed the night with his friends. At about nine o'clock on Sunday morning, the first news of the sad occurrence was made known at Holmwood homestead, when a passing horseman notified Mr Tatham that a man was lying dangerously hurt on the roadside. Assistance was soon forthcoming, but the helpers had hardly arrived on the scene when Mr Cameron, who was then in extremis, expired. -- The body was conveyed to the house, and . the police at Masterton and Tinui were informed of the occurrence.

The deceased was riding a flighty pony, and it is surmised that it shied when he was returning home, and threw him heavily on to his head, inflicting injuries from which death ensued. The late Mr Cameron, who was about forty-five years of age, was well-known in Masterton, being a prominent member of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society, whose annual sports- in. Masterton on Nfety Year's Day he attended. As far as was known last evening, the deceased had no relatives in New .Zealand, hut one of his sisters is Matron of the Alexandra Hospital at Edinburgh, Scotland, and a brother a doctor in the same city. The deceased, who, before coming to. New Zealand, served in the Melbourne Police Force, intended to visit his relatives in Scotland in the course of a month or two. The body will be brought to Masterton to-day, and an inquest will probably be held this afternoon.
