It indefinitely stated that Mr J. R. Stansell will contest the Manawatu seat at the coming elections. ~; The Rev. W. Raine, of Masterton, leaves this week on an extended visit to the South Island. p A cablegram received last night 4'rom Paris announced the death of the Baroness Alphonse Rothschild. Mrs Malcolm Ross, the well-known lady journalist, arrived by the Mantua at Fremantle on Wednesday. The steamer h due in Auckland on the . 18th insfc. A Melbourne cable i«.eiyed early Saturday morning, stated that Captain E. Vero Barclay, a wellknown surveyor in the Taranaki and iWangamu districts, lias been apjpointed by the Commonwealth Go.'vernment to take charge of the Northern Territory explorations and surveys. Mr Theophilus East on, a- wellknown resident of Foxton, died at his residence; on Thursday afternoon, after an illness of a few weeks. Deceased had resided in Foxton for upwards of forty years, and was respected for his honesty of purpose and his kindness of heart. He leaves a widow, five daughters and four sons, and 21 grandchildren.
