THE TELEPHONE SERVICE.
Alterations are at present being made in the outer section of the Ma sterton telephone service. There is room for slight improvement in tlie inner workings ,of the system. The staff itself is in every way efficient, but the methods in Which it is employed are totally out of date. For instance, before one subscriber can be connected with another, he has to make repeated rings on his instrument. In the larger towns all one has to do is to communicate ■the number he requires to the telephone clerk, and, unless the service be engaged, he is placed in. immediate communication with the person {at the other end. There is no apparent reason why a similar method should not be adopted in Masterton. This is only one: of. several improveiments which might be-suggested. ~;
