TEACHING OF SWIMMING.

The distressing fatality which occurred in the Ruamahanga river at the latter end of last week, when a young lady nineteen years of age lost her life, emphasises the necessity -of shimming being made an essential part of the curriculum at our State schools. - - Statistics show . that there are a greater number of "violent" deaths: from drowning'in tlie Dominion than from' any other cause. . This is a reproach upon our: education system. The regulations of the Education Department provide that a certain portion of the school week shall be devoted to physical j drill. It is admitted by medical au- J thorities that there is no form of physical exercise more wholesome than swimming. And yet it is ah exercise which, in many of" our city, and even country schools, is abso-, lutely neglected. The Education* Boards of the .Dominion should insist upon greater attention being paid to this form of physical culture.
