Had tho band rendered the music from the lawn the general publie would have been enabled to appreciate it much more than from a corner of the grandstand, which was so closely packed with people. Speculation was brisk throughout, tho totalisator issuing both £1 and 10s tickets, the sum pat through being £BOS6. NOTES ON THE RACING, i: (By "Zetland.") , Of the eleven starters in the Maiden Hack, Royal Knight was made a firm favourite. He was never 'prominent, and Odessa getting away smartly led throughout and v» oh very easily from Rumble and Overheard.: The Blen-heim-owned Dauriton was well up with the leaders for half a mile. . Full Rate, despite his welter weigh! of lOst 121b, was strongly backed foi the Tuhitarata Handicap. Previous to the start Simplex bolted about live furlongs. At the home turn Full Rate was galloping along in good style, but failed to withstand a challenge by Memo. Frank, who, wellhandled by Stan'Reid, wonbyashorthead; Sid: Reid,: rider of Full Rate, was brought .before tlie site wards?; for ' boring " on Merrie Frdnlc" :in ihe straight, and a caution was administered him. . Succession was the popular selection i for the Rimutaka 'Hack-. -; the Conqueror mare was infront to the finish, i and won easily from two moderates m Mediterranean and Rangikapua. j There were seven starters * for 1 the Wairarapa Cup, and Sandstream was made a-favouritp. Passive carried on most of the running. She was joined by First Battery at the riverside, and; the pair came into the' straight together. , At the distance Sandstream put in a fine run and won by a length. Gunboat ran a fair race and finished fourth, while Merrie Zealand was full of running close up. v Bronze was ijiadea solid' favourite for the Nursery Handicap. Sinapsis moved out .from the barrier" quickly, and without being challenged won by | about six lengths from Bronze. Sir Knox.made up ground towards the 'finish, and will be suited to a:. longer distance. .-V ". •■. .■//, • Merrie Fly; was made a strong order for the Pukio -K[ack. He behaved; very badly at the post! .and derayed Vthe. start. Mr R. Buick'srecentpurchase,' Zealand, was always in a good position, and won easily from British Maid, The favourite, who appeared to be short of a gallop, finished a good third. In the Reynolds Handicap there were plenty of backers for .Rill, Sunbonnet and Mataari. Sunbonnet and Rill were at the lead of affairs until the straight was reached, when the latter came away and won a nice race; comfortably. Waiwerawera beat Sunbonnet in the last few strides for second place. Skye lost too much ground at the start to be able to run prominently. . Merrie Goer was looked upon as practically a certainty for the Mokai .Welter. He and Foreshot ran well to the home turn, but them, Epsom Downs came away, and finishing full of running, won by two lengths . from Negative. . The Multiform—Problerii colt, Acrostic, was Very sore and failed to take a hand in the settlement of the race.' .
