HAWES DISASTER.
THE INQUEST RESUMED. (Received December 30, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 29. At the inquest on the bodies of the victims of the terrible railway accident at Hawes, Yorkshire, on Christmas Eve, evidence was given that the fire started in the second carriage from the end. The ' carriage was blocked by wreckage, and this made it impossible to reach and help the passengers. Six out of eight cars were burnt. The sleeping cars were lighted by electricity and the rest by gas. Flames .appeared ten minutes after the collision. A Scotch mist affected the view of the driver. The inquest was adjourned till the 12th January.
