WILL THERE BE A STRIKE?
Will there he a coal strike in New Zealand? That is a question which is exciting -a good deal of discussion throughout the Dominion just now. The laying in of heavy stocks of coal hy the Railway Department is, in itself, significant, whilst the increasing of stocks hy large industrial firms points to a feeling of uneasiness. The presence in the Dominion of a strike-leader from Australia, the cancellation of the registration of the various Miners' Unions, and the touring of the country by the President of the Miners' Union, are sufficient in themselves to arouse suspicion. It is quite on the cards that some important demands will shortly be made by the miners, and failing their being conceded by the owners, a general strike will take place. Meantime, the Miners' Federation is endeavouring to enlist the sympathy of outside Unions.
