DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.! 7INUI, A large number of people journeyed from here yesterday to attend the Whakataki sports, and needless to say were not disappointed. The weather was perfect, and the sports ground was in good order. A capital dinner was provided by Mr Barty at the hotel. The committee deserve a word of praise for the management, as all events were got off to time, and were keenly competed for. It must be gratifying to the promoters of the sports to have such a large attendance, especially the large number of ladies. Visitors were also present from Mastcrton, and. were very interested in the horse events. PAHIATUA. On the local howling green yesterday afternoon, a number of games for the President's trophy were played, and resulted as follows: G. C. Miller (10 points) beat J. A. Walsh ( by seven; J. W. Mills (3 points) beat \V. Husband (12 points) by twenty; F. Sayers (4 points), heat (J; Moore (10 points) by nine. The following team has been selected to represent Pahiatua on Ncay Year's Day at Terrace End in the tournament for the Toms Feathers:—J. A. Walsh, C. E. Clifton, F. Sayers, J. W. Mills (skip.) To enable the players to reach Terrace End in time for the opening games, Mr John Hughes, one of our most enthusiastic bowlers, has generously offered to convey the team to Woodville in his motor car, so that they can catch the first train leaving there for the convincing ground. The twelfth annual meeting of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society was, perhaps, the most successful in the history of the Club, and the financial part of the gathering should pan out exceedingly well. Masterton was strongly represented in the piping and dancing competitions, and the , Irish Jig, as usual, was won by a Scotchman (shades of St. Patrick!) —an individual rejoicing in the name of Roderick Moßae, a Mastertonian, and a fine dancer. The annual ball held in connection with tlie gathering in the evening was an unqualified success, the Library Hall, although it had recently been enlarged, being packed with a merry crowd of dancers. The tak- i ings at the door were a record. The Mangatainoka people are anything if hot enthusiastic.
Captain J. B. Whyte, of Ngaturi, has purchased some two thousand acres of sheep country at Morriusville. Another well-known settler of the district, Mr Peter Halliday, has bought fifteen hundred acres of similar country in the Waikato. Rain is falling heavily at time of writing, and the atmosphere is considerably cooler. Mr J. Lundcn, a former resident of this district, and now manager of the Cambridge branch of the Bank of New South Wales, is on a visit to Pahiatua. Mr W. J. Reove, of Whangarei, is looking up old friends in this district. Mr Reeve was at one time Clerk of the Court here. Yesterday afternoon he had an enjoyable gamo of bowls on the local green.
Mr W. H. Hawkins has intimated his intention of presenting a pair of silver-mounted bowls for a champion singles competition, the conditions being one game of twenty-one heads, entries for which close on the local green on Saturday next.
CARTERTON. Mr K. S. Armstrong, of Palmorston North, is a visitor to Carterton. Mr. Jas. Baillie, who recently disposed of his business here, is leaving the district shortly. During - his 'long residence here, Mr Baillie has always taken an interest in public affairs, and it is proposed to make ■some public recognition of his services. A committee has been appointed to further the object.
A welcome shower of rain fell in the district yesterday, and did an immense amount of good. It, however, upset harvesting operations.
