IMPORTANT NEW DEVELOPMENT.

Received This Morning, 12.5 o'clock

MELBOURNE, December 29

The Federal Government will next week consider the Vancouver mail service in the light of a new and important development. Mr W. A. Hughes a few days ago received a letter from a well-known firm in Sydney, intimating that a group of merchants and shippers specially interested in the . development of trade with Canada were prepared, if the contract were once more thrown open to tender, to submit an offer in competition with the Union Company.

Mr Hughes status that nothing has so far been done in the way of negotiations, and the matter will have to stand over until the return of the Postmaster-General.
