ASHBURTON, Last Night, The injuries to George Smith, who (whilst motor-cycling) collided with the train yesterday, proved fatal. Death ensued at ten o'clock last night. Deceased was aged twentynine, and a member of the firm of Smith and Sons, sawmillers. He .leaves a widow and child. ■ 'jlE KUITI, Last Night. A lad named Arthur Littlejolm was drowned in the river .about six miles from town, while bathing yesterday with a companion. The body has not yet been recovered. ASHBURTU>, Last Night. At an inquest this morning touching the death of George Martin Smith, the coroner returned a verdict that deceased died through injuries accidentally received through colliding with a train. The enginedriver of the train, who is an experienced official, stated in the witness box that motor cyclists were a great trial to engine-drivers. They repeatedly rushed over crossings in front of trains, <md thought it a joke to. clear the engine by a narrow margin, thus causing tne man on the engine a great deal of needless anxiety. These remarks did not refer to the present case. ASHBURTON, Lest Night. At the adjourned inquest concerning the death of Walter Edward Jones, who was killed through falling clown a chute at tne Fairfield freezing works on Friday last, the evidence of the foreman of works and several workmen was taken, and the enquiry was further adjourned to, January 13th, when medical evidence will be taken. The Guardian credits the rumour that the widow of the deceased intends to proceed against the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company for £2OOO compensation.
