TROTTING MEETINGS.
The. riot at the Auckland trotting meeting should result in a searching investigation by the Colonial Secretary into the methods adopted at trotting meetings generally. It is a matter of common report that, the amount oi "crooked" work practised at trotting meetings has alarmingly increased in. recent years. The unsophisticated public is "taken down" in a barefaced manner, and the alleged sport has degenerated into a vicious form of daylight thieving. The pony race meetings, which were legislated out of existence, last year, were a mere circumstance for swindling compared with some of the trotting meetings at which the totalisatoi- is legalised.
