RIOTS AT AUCKLAND.
TROTTING MEETING r UP,
POLICE POWERLESS
By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night
After the running of the Pony Cup, the third race on the Auckland Trotting Club's programme, this afternoon, "the crowd set up a hostile demonstration against the starter, which culminated in a riot. Thousands swarmed on to tlio course in front of the stewards' stand and judge's box, and absolutely defied the efforts of the police, to shift them. An attempt was made by mounted constables, assisted by the members of the polico force, and detectives present, to clear the course, but this only incited the crowd, and several times the police were in danger of being pulled off their horses, The crowd repeatedly refused to leave, and for over two hours-all attempts to restore order were without avail. The whole racing programme' was hung up, the i running of the remainder of the events having to be postponed until to-morrow. Only three ponies out of thirteen got away in the Pony Cup race.
