Webb was beaten on a mile and a quarter, but he rowed gamely to the end, and in the last half mile reduced a four lengths lead to two lengths. "DICK" ARNST SURPRISED. (Received Last Night, 9.10 o'clock.) SYDNEY, December 27. "Dick" Arnst, commenting on the result of the race between Webb and Pearce, said he was much surprised at Pcaree's win. Ho pinned his faith in AY ebb, whom he backed. The result must have been accounted for, he said, by one of two things. Either AVebb had lost his dash, or Pearcc had greatly improved. Arnst added that he would give Pearcc.a chance for the championship of the world within six months, provided that they find the stakes. He preferred that tho match take place at Easter. Arnst disclaimed any serious intention of taking up boxing.
