- TURF NOTE.'?. (By "Zetland.") By winning the Manawatu Stakes yesterday, Sir George Clifford's filly, Madam Madcap, proved that she retains her sprinting form. The time, Imin. 14sec., shows the pace was solid all the way. The runner up, Hermia, may be considered one of > the best of her size in the Dominion. • The sting being out of the ground at Awapuni allowed Iranui to show her best form, and the little Soult mare beat a good field in the Sum'mer Handicap of one mile. To the surprise of many, Naumai ran out the five furlongs event in good style, and settled the pretensions of Warsong, Lord Soult and other speedy sprinters. The acceptances received for the Wairarapa meeting are very '.satisfactory, and there should he. good racing at Tauherenikau on New Year's Day., The racing track is in perfect order, and arrangements are in course of progress towards ensuring another successful gathering. The Woodville Jockey Club's programme for the meeting to be held on February 22nd and 23rd is now published. The sum of £lo()0 is to' be given in stakes, the principal events being the Woodville Cup, of 200 sovs. For the Hack Hurdle races £BS is allotted each day, and as some clubs are deleting jumping events from their programmes may owners will be glad to find the Woodville Club continuing to make, their "bill, of fare" a varied one. The central position of Woodville ensures plenty of patronage both on part of owners and the general, sporting public, consequently the coming meeting is .sure to rank as successful as usual. ■ The Auckland v-up candidates have not been called upon to execute much in the -way of fast work at Ellerslio. Kopu has so far accomplished the best work, but went sore on Wednesday, and was lame on the following day. Advocate hurt his stifle, and "»vas scratched on Thursday. Bridge, Diabolo, Waimangu, Sedition, Paisano, Prophet and (Joldfincler are standing up to their work, but have not shown br...iant fo'v.i on the tracks. Wellington sports are pinning their faith to Diabolo, Hawke's Bay will go for Kopu and Bridge, while Aucklanders are now selecting Sedition to win. the big prize. The race will be run on Monday, so the result will not much longer be in doubt.
