IS IT A HOAX?
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. The bottle containing an alleged message from a member of the Duco wreck, which was picked up on the beach near Southbridge, was brought to town late this afternoon, and the actual message itself was sent to Wellington by to-night's steamer. The bottle is similar in shape to the ordinary quart beer bottle, and bears the brand "Towley and Roast.',' The message was written on the back of a race card headed, "Dunedin Meeting, Third Day, Saturday, F,eb. ruary 26th," the card being printed by the City Printing Co., Wellington. The card was folded -up and placed inside a yellow Three Castles cigarette, wrapper. The message is written in pencil in a somewhat shaky handwriting. The text is as already sent. It is stated that the handwriting of Petersen, who was on the steamer on the last unlucky voyage, is known to a Wellington resident, and that that gentleman will be able to say whether or not the message purporting to come from Petersen is a genuine one.
