MR J. C. W. AITKEN.

There is, probably, no more striking personality in Wellington at the Vj&mfiC time than Mr J. G. W. Aitken. This gentleman has filled almost every office in the city that is worth occupying. In turn he has been Chief Magistrate, member of the House of Representatives, member of the Education Board and Chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Apart from these important public positions, he has always : manifested a keen interest in social and religious questions, and his hundreds of private benefactors will never be known to the world at large., Conscientious in business, scrupulous in every transaction, clean-living and beneficent, he is ,a citizen whose character is worthy of emulation, and Avhoso footprints will be left upon the sands of time. The position which he has so long and honourably filled, as President of the Y.M.C.A., has brought him into close touch with the young men of the city, upon whose character his splendid example has exercised a deep and parmane.it influence. That the light (,f his smiling countenance may shi-ie f':• year's upon the city of his adoption will be tho hope expressed by scores of sincere friends.
