THE TEACHING PROFESSION.
TO MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE
EXTENDING THE SCHOOL AGE,
Recieved Last Night, 9.30 o'clock. SYDNEY, December 19.
The Hon. Mr Beeby, Minister for Education, in opening a School Teachers' Conference, declared that the Government intended to largely extend its legislation, and to make the teaching profession as attractive as possible. Teachers would also be granted full civil and political rights, with the limitation that they mustnot criticise their "boss," meaning the Government.
It was also proposed to extend the education age to 1.7 or 18. The extension would be voluntary at the outset, but ultimately a system of compulsion would be introduced. The extension would take the form of night classes, and would begin with factory boyß and girls.' A system of superannuation was receiving consideration.
