NIGHT'S CANTATA.

the choir of St. Matthew's Church rendered a programme of sacred music in the church last night, and its performance was a most creditable one. The first part of the programme was made up of the following selections and solos—Organ eolo, "Introduction and Allegro," Mr H. S. Claughton; Air, "flonor and Arm?," Mr F. J. llunn; song, "Nearer My God to Thee," Miss Handley; organ solo, "Theme with variations," Mr Claughton; selection, "Gloria in Excelsis," Choir. 3M the items were nicely rendered, jarticulary those on the crgan by Mr Caughton. The second half of the programme was-taken up with the rendition of Sir John Staine'o sacred cantata, ■ "The Daughter of Jairus." The tolo and chorus work was niceiy rendered, and showed evidences of much practice. -Those taking the sobs - were:—Soprano, Mrs Claughton and Miss Eclwarda; tenor, Mr H. P. Green; bass, Messrs Hunn and G. A. Jones. ..Mr Claughton ably presided at the organ, while "a Trumpet Obligato by Messrs Hutchi; Eon and Williams was excellently' rendered. As a result of the cantata the New Church Building Fund will fcffiWt |o a. considerable amount.
