ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.
As evidence of the relaxing of the money market, and the near approach of the general election, it is satisfactory to note that the Advances to Settlers Office, which has, during the last year or two, confined its advances to sums not exceeding £SOO, is now operating in sums up to £3OOO. It win. be remembered that the member for Masterton made a strong protest in theHone against the niggardliness of tne Department. Mr Hogg went so far as to assert that the Advances to Settlers Office was a dead letter. lie had evidently forgotten, however, the facility with which dead letters are resurrected in election years. Government money will be spent like water during the next few months. And after the feast—the famine.
