LITERARY AND MUSICAL COMPETITIONS.
DEPUTATION TO TKUST LANDS TRUST. i """""" A deputation from the Masterton Literary and Musical Competitions Society, consisting of Dr. Cook, Mr R. W. Robson, and the Rev. Hodge,, waited upon the Trust Lands Trustees last evening in support of an application for a monetary grant in aid of the proposed competitions. Dr. Cook explained that the Society was of a highly educational character, and one which, it was hoped, would appeal to the Trust. In answer to questions, Dr. Cook Btated that the competitions lasted for several days. They were open to competitors from all parts of the Dominion.
Mr Eton suggested that the Society should approach the Trust at a later period. The funds of the Trust were very low just now. Dr. Cook stated that it was proposed to hold the first competitions in July. The Chairman said the Trustees could not make a grant at the present time. He suggested that another application be made after March 3lst. The Rev. Hodge urged that the competitions were of considerable educative value. The deputation woud like some indication of what the S'ruptees would be prepared to give, if anything. Mr W. H. Jackson thought the Trustees might here and now tell the deputation that the Town Hall would be made available to the Society on liberal terms. The Chairman said this was so. Mr D. Caselberg thought that if the deputation called again it would have a better hope for financial help. The deputation then thanked the Trustees for their assurances, and retired. , The Trustees) subsequently decided, to make provision for a grant when the next estimates are under consideration.
