THE LASCAR QUESTION.
Discussing the Lascar labour question, the Sunday Times, Sydney, which is edited by Mr T. R. Roydhouse, one time of Masterton, says: —"What would New Zealand say if vessels carrying Maoris were specially taxed by Australia or in any other part of the British Empire? Yet the Indians are just as much British subjects as the Maoris, and ■both are worthy people. A wage standard can be maintained without proceeding to extremes against 'coloured brethren.' The belief generally entertained is that the action of the New Zealand Parliament is not directed so much at coloured crews as at the, company employing them on their ships. The P. and 0. service to New. Zealand is'a good\thing for the country, but if the'people of it fail to recognise the fact, and desire to stop it, it is entirely their business. They should hesitate long, .however, before > they sever one Aof the strings of .communication,,; witli the outer world. An undeveloped country needs as many of these as it is posible to get." *
