CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor.) Si?", —Witli reference to tuo report of the Borough Council mooting contained in both local papers yesterday, in which it was made to appear that £l9 was owing by the Mastorton Cricket Council for rent of the Park Oval, J may state that this amount is made up of £6 10s which was properly due and which lias since been paid, and £l2 10s rent for the current season, £'G of which is due at the end of December, and the Balance, £6 10s, at the end of March, 191]. The £l2 10s, therefore, with which the. Cricket Council are charged is not due yet. As to Cr. Morris' remarks fbout the "toffs," Cr. Morris probably can define the term. I can't. Which side of the line does ho fall, above or below ? Perhaps Cr. Morris will also let us know if he can c'aim to' be as good a man to the Park and of <is much benefit as the average cricketer who goes down night after night, sometimes in the mornings, also, and waters and rolls the pitches, and generally looks after the ground on which lie is playing. The cricketers would be pleased if Cr. Morris would instead of wasting "wind" or "gas~ (both light articles) in the BorongTi Council, where his remarks si mto bear little weight, would expend Lome of it on the Oval. "Davy," our genial caretaker would be pleased to give him a job. Perhaps he might form himself into a committee, and, to use his own vernacular, "Get his head read!" I might state in conclusion that the cricketers do not get the. credit they deserve for the good they do to tffe Park. Taking one instance: Is not the Park a public institution and one that deserves patronizing? Do not the cricket matches attract to the "Park a certain section. of the public who otherwise would not go fchara and see what a beautiful' asset we have? Also, the various teams during the season invite visitors from elsewhere to play on the Park, and the writer can vouch for the statement that a number of tlieso visitors have at various times been in Masterton, and, but for the cricket would never have known what a beauty spot we liave in the town. Visiting cricketers, as a rule, compliment us on our ground, not from a cricket point of view, but on account of the beautiful surroundings. Another thing that the public may not be away© of, is that a lot of the hose kept at the Park, also the big roller, and two sprinklers, which are continually in use in keeping the Park grounds in good order, have been bought by, and are the property of, the cricketers. The Cricket Council, of course, cannot look after the whole of the Park, and do not wish to take credit' for doing so, out s-.t the same time the members of the council have in view the fact that the Oval, to produce good cricket, must be kept properly, and for that purpose are trying and are slowly _ accomplishing their object of raising enough money, whereby the Oval—not the least beautiful part of the Park—will be kept in perfect order. —I am, etc., C. J. MACKELLAR, Hon. Sec. Masterton Cricket Council. Masterton, December 8, 1910.
