THE ABSENTEE TAX.

AN IMPORTANT DECISION. j WELLINGTON, Last Night. | Mr Justice Cooper delivered a very important judgment in the Supremo J Court to-day. An originating ' sum-1 mons was brought by the Trustees | of the Levin estate against the Commissioner of Taxes, to determine the basis of the absentee tax on property valued at £95,000. It was contended for the plaintiffs that an absentee, who was a joint owner, was not liable if he owned no other land in New Zealand. His Honour held that the Commissioner assessed the amount correctly, and the absentee was liable.
