The estate of the late Sir Henry Tichborne is valued at £144,631.

Mrs Lucy Eleanor Tiffin, wife of Mr F. J. Tiffin, and daughter of the late Dr G. D. Montbitli, of Wellington, died on Friday night. ;

. Mr M. Laracy, organiser of the Zealand Labour Federation, is at present, in Masterton. Misses Firihis and Holiis, late of the Ar.cadia Tea Rooms in Masterton, have purchased the "Kia Ora" tea-rooms in Napier.

The Royal Society has awarded the Albert Medal to Madame Curie, the renowned woman scientist, who recently succeeded in isolating radium as a pure white metal.

The death is announced from Washington of Mr Emil Dumais, who acted as war correspondent for "The Times" in India and South * Africa. Deceased was also founder of. the Manitoba Agricultural College. Elfie MacDougall, of Dunedin, is the winner of the gold medal given by Lord Islington for competition 4 by New Zealand students in conhec"tion with Trinity College, London.

A cable received last night from Ottawa, stated that M. Jaques Faure, a nephew of viie French exPresident, has died at Quebec from typhoid fever. He suffered hardships in the St. Louis balloon race, landing at Wisconsin. Mr J. Henry, the oil expert, is a passenger by tha P. and O. steamer Mantua. He will visit iNew Zealand, the. United States, and the Far East in the interests of tlio Colonial un Company. The death occurred at tiavelock North last week of Mr Joseph H. Williams, a well-known settler of Hawke's Bay. The deceased, who was a native of the Dominion, wj}s 56 years of age. He was the owner of Te Apiti station, and. Cricklewood station at Wairoa. For a number of years he managed the Frimley estate for Mr J. N. Williams. He was also a prominent member of the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Association.

Mr E. J. Chilton, signwriter, of Masterton, has accepted a good position with Messrs Smith and Smith, Ltd., of Wellington, and left for the Empire City on Saturday afternoon. Mr Chilton has always taken a keen interest in movements having for their object the social and material advancement of the town, and his services have been freely given. His departure from Masterton will be sincerely regretted by a large circle of friends, who will wish him every success in his new appointment.
