STERILITY AMONG COWS.
INFORMATION SOUGHT. In connection witli the trouble annually experienced by many dairyfarmers through their cows continually going back for service, investigations are now being carried out by Mr A. R. Young, Veterinary Supervisor, the Inspectors of Stock, and Inspectors at meat-export slaughterhouses on the west coast of the North Island, in the direction of finding out what bearing, if any, a diseased condition of the organ of the bull, such as is sometimes met with, "or disease of the organs of the cow, may have upon Ithe trouble. Specimens, whenever they can be secured, are sent to the Wallaceville Laboratory for examination, and dairy farmers can assist the Department very much in this matter if they will advise Inspectors of stock of any cases in which they -notice swelling of tlie sheath of the bull, or a discharge around its opening. It is suggested that this may be the ■general cause of 'failure of ocws. What is wanted is to find out what proportion of cases of failure may be due to it. It must be impressed upon dairy 'farmers that tliev should never neglect the treatment advised in the leaflet on contagious abortion and sterility-—namely, the irritation of the cows, and the washing of the bull—whenever tliev have the slightost trouble in this direction.
