PAHIATUA.
A concert in aid of the Mangatainoka school funds was held at Mangatainoka last evening, and was a great success. At a special meeting of the Pahiatua County Council, held yesterday, Mr S. Bolton was elected chairman for the ensuing year. In reply to a communication from the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce, urging that something substantial should be done this summer towards ~the opening of the Makairo-Gorge Road for wheel traffic, the member for the district, Mr R. 8.. Ross, has-written to the secretary of the Chamber (Mr J. A. Walsh) to the effect that the matter will receive his attention. ' A quartette of Terrace End bowlers, Messrs Sinclair,, Toms, Adams and Turner (skip.), were decisively beaten on the local green yesterday, by the holders of" the Dixon Challenge Cup—Messrs J. Hughes, W. Ransom, W. Mcßratney, and W. Wakeman (skip.) The game was never in doubt from the outset, the Pahiatua team eventually winning : easily, the final scores being The green, which was in perfect order, was particularly keen, and never played better. The game was witnessed by a large number of spectators, including many ladies. Another game which attracted some attention was played by Messrs Sayers, Osborne-Lilly and Walsh (skip). This was another runaway contest, "the first-named team winning very comfortably, the scores after the twenty-first head being 31—10. A Masterton team has challenged the holders of the Dixon Cup, and the game will be played in Pahiatua on Wednesday next.
