AMERICAN ELECTION.

CABLE NEWS

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.

A BRITISH FORECAST.

NEWSPAPER OPINIONS.

(Received Last Night, 10.30 o'clock.) LONDON, November 11.

The Times forecasts a Democratic majority in the United States of forty. It attributes the debacle to the unpopularity of the Payne tariff.

My Roosevelt, it says, may learn the lesson of moderation and yet snatch a victory if he re-organises the Republicans on progressive lines before the Presidential election.

The Morning Post states that it cannot be said that the Democrats owe their victory and position to their merits. They have no definite policy. Their success, it says, was largely due to the unpopularity of the Republicans. The Standard says it is an exaggeration to describe the result as a crushing blow to Mr Roosevelt. Though the Republicans have lost control, they remain entrenched in the Senate;'

The Liberal newspapers rejoice in the staggering blow that has been inflicted upon high protective duties.
