Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1910. JUDGE SIMS.
! The Labour Party in New Zealand is apparently not enamoured of Judge Sims. It never loses an opportunity of expressing its dissatisfaction at his decisions. It would, of course, be impossible to find a Judge who would please everybody in the matter of Arbitration Court awards. But that is not a consideration with the Labour Unions. They howl at the slightest, provocation. There is no objection to this, provided other people are*'not disturbed. When, however, members of Parliament join in the chorus* as they did in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, things, begin to assume a serious aspect. The Arbitration Court, presided over by a Judge, should lie as free from political influence and control as the Supreme Court of the Dominion. Once the findings of a Judge are made the subject of criticism by Parliament, the dignity and power of the Court is imperilled, ft is to be regretted, therefore, that a "tag" to an Auckland award should have been made the excuse for a violent attack upon the President of the Arbitration | Court by 'members of the House of Representatives. It was only the other day that the Prime Minister, from his place in the House, strongly deprecated attacks upon the Judges of the Supreme Court, ana it was painfully suggestive that he should c:i V»VJ.ac: 'ay Lave allowed hi; \
own followers to traverse the decision of Judge Sims without entering a protest. The Arbitration Court may, or may not be a good thing for the Dominion. Its decisions can hardly be expected to give universal satisfaction. But, whilst the Court is in existence, and its operations are governed by statute law, it ill becomes members of the Legislature to traverse its findings. If the Court is not required, by all means wipe it out. So long as it remains a Court, however, it should bo treated with the respect it deserves.
