REMEMBER THE SABBATH.

The rather novel news that- democratic Victoria seems inclined to do away with the sanctity of Sunday comes as a surprise to anyone who understands the physical and mentaf necessity of a weekly day of rest. i It is not necessary here to deal with the religious aspect, for no doubt the churches of Victoria will set about to mitigate the injury that will be done to the people generally should ; Sunday be jettisoned as a day of 'rest. Tt is not clear from the cabled news if the instructions to the police to cease prosecutions for Sunday trading means that the existing law for Sabbath observance is to remain but to be taken no notice of, or if its repeal is contemplated. It is evident, says a contemporary, that a hard and fast law enforcing general cessation of all work on the Sabbath would rob people of very necessary privileges, for the cessation of all passenger services wVmld deprive people in large cities from taking the recreation that can only be had on Sunday. -The question of Sunday trading is a very important one. If Sunday trading is allowed, it is certain that to carry it on employees must work. This j will bo the crux on which employer I and employee wll break. Tt is al- . most unbelievable that the New South Wales Sabbath observance law is to be taken no notice of by the police, for since the days of the penal settlements, the police have been keen in preventing p. unlo following their week-day r~,-<.:-r.lions on Sunday. It is sincerely hoped that New Zealand will resist all endeavours that may be made to cut out Sunday as a day of rest, on religious, moral and physical grounds.
