MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly meeting of the Masterton.Borough Council was held last evening, there being present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), and 'Jouncillors F. W. Temple, T., Eoar, W. Pragnell, J. P. Prentice, W. Morris and J. C. Ewington. The report of the meeting of the Committee of the Council, held on October 25tb, was'reed. The Sergeant of Police reported that the holder of a cab-license had been found drunk in his cab, and had been fined 5a for drunkenness. The Inspector of Nuisances, Mr Cairns, reported similarly. —Mr Cbradine, on behalf of Mr Cullen, waited upon the Council and asked that the matter be adjourned, as the owner of the cab had a wife and family to maintain, and if he lost his license he would be compelled to seek shelter in the Bankruptcy Court. Councillors Pragnell and Morris were F.orry that they could not give the man another chance. He had been three times previously warned. Cr Prentice thought the matter should be dealt with by a full Council. He moved that consideration of the su!ject be. deferred for a month. O: Hoar seconded. He understood the man intended taking out a prohibition order against hi.msilf. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Rigg. 7he certified lalance-sheet of the Council, for the year ending March 31st last, was submitted by thes Treasurer. It contained two "tags," but the (lerk explained that these were annually recurring, and could not be avoided under the Act.—The Mayor was authorised to sign the balance-sheet.

r ,'he Borough Engineer tubmitted his monthly report, He stated that the cost of tarring and sanding the footpaths was such that he could not recommend its being proceeded with to any great extent. He intended re-tarring Queen street before Ihmtmas. —On the motion of tie Mayor, it was decided that the question of tarring and sanding footpaths be held over until the next Committee meeting. It was decided to re-arrange a loan with the 1 üblic Tiustee. 'J he manager of the abattoirs requested that an additional room, forth* use of employees, te provided at the public abattoirs.—On the motion of Cr; Ewington, it was decided that plans for the building te prepared for sutmission to the next meeting.

A motion by Cr. Mcrris, that a committee, consisting of the Mayor, Crs. 1-ragnell, Ewingto), Pauling and the mover. I e set up to report on the condition cf the Borough horse?, etc, was rejected. Cr. Morris pointed out that one of the horses was suffering from ringbone, that another was not in good working order, and that one of the working staff of the Borough had been employed I ecause he was not fit for other work.

The Mayor stated that he would instruct the Engineer to furnish a report on the condition of the Borough horses.
