CONFIRMATION SERVICE.
IN ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH. St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, was crowded last night, extra seats having to be placed in the aisles, the occasion being a confirmation service by His Lordship the Bishop of Wellington. His Lordship was assisted hy the Revs. Watson and There was a full choir. There were over seventy candidates for confirmation, and the Bishop Addressed them on the words of St. Paul to Timothy—"Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ." The speakerpointed out to the candidates their duty, and exhorted them to constancy and perseverance as faithful servants of the Lord. St. Paul, he said, knew what he was talking about, being an old man at the time he wrote to Timothy, and full of experience, having had to harden himself up to bear the floggings, stonings, and imprisonments he had suffered. Christ himself had pointed out many times the hardships they would go through, who took up the Cross and followed Him. This they might remember with satisfaction their burden would never be greater than they could bear. As Christians they must be prepared to make sacrifices, face difficulties, and aeny themselves. When they gave, let it be something they wanted, not something they did not want. When they prayed, let them not begrudge a quarter of an hour daily, but remember the Lord spent the night in prayer and agony for them, If they fasted weekly, and at Lent, let it be for the reason that they were determined to conquer the flesh. Whatever was a temptation to them must be conquered, and as good soldiers, determined to do their duty, they must harden themselves up to be fit for -the work. "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light," was the subject of a brief address to the congregation at the close of the confirmation service.
