MASTERTON CHESS CLUB.
A TROPHY CONTEST
The Masterton Chess Club members have for some weeks been playing for a trophy, given by the Wairarapa Age. No conditions were stipulated, but a desire was expressed that the middle and lower grades should ho catered for. The second and third class players were consequently moved up a place, which has resulted in the fifth and lower classes coming out better than in the previous tournament. The position now is that if the game between J. Winchester and T. J. Thompson results in a win for the latter, he wins the trophy, but if Winchester win's, Thompson, J. Logan and W. Hood .tie for first place, and will play off for the filial. Games have been played in the best of spirit right through, and members have improved steadily in quality of play. Thompson-will meet J. Winchester on Friday next, on which evening members will decide as to the manner in which the season will be wound up. The" date will probably he Friday, 18th November, for which invitations will be issued to players in Carterton, Lower Valley, etc., while local chess players will he cordially welcomed. Prizes won during the season will be presented by the President. A trophy for the boys of the Club was donated by the Age, play for which is now in progress. The first place is being fought for by Roy Gardner and C. Hoffeins.
