CYCLING.

DUNLOP 100 MILES UNPAGED ROAD R'ECOKD.

ATTEMPT FROM MASTERTON ON WEDNESDAY.

An event of general interest, being an attempt to lower a world's road record for 100 mile's, unpaced, is arranged to take place on Wednesday, over a twenty-five mile course, starting from Masterton, the rider being W. A. O'Donnell, of Levin. The present test has arisen out of an offer made by the Dunlop Kubber Company of Australasia, Ltd., of £2O to the first Australasian rider to better a world's record recently put up by Leon Meredith, the English champion who established the cycling century in 4hrs 52mins 51 4-ssec. on the Bath road, and it is still to be determined whether any Australasian rider is capable of accomplishing such a performance. As some considerable difficulty is found in locating a decent stretch of road in Australasia, outside of the Victorian Western district roads, the Dunlop Company are allowing attempts to be made over a twentylive mile out and home course, covered twice, which in this instance has been chosen on a stretch of road between Masterton and Fea'therston, which is at present being surveyed and measured by Mr P. W. Fowler, of Masterton, who has been appointed special official for the purpose by the Wellington Centre of L.NZ.W. O'Donnell, who has earned some reputation in New [Zealand as a strong rider, is obtaining special training for the event, and it is expected he will make a notable ride, given fair weather conditions. It is proposed to start the rider from Masterton about 5 o'clock to morrow morning, from whence he will ride a twenty-five mile section of his journey, ending in about Featherston, returning over the ground to Masterton, which course he will cover twice, finishing in Masterton, it is to be hoped, at about 10 o'clock. The rider's attempt will be particularly severe, as the road does not approach that on which the English record was attained, and O'Donnell has to contend with no fewer than six water races on each section of the journey. As an alternative to record performance, the Dunlop Company has decided to award a £5 5s gold medal ii the rider succeeds in covering the distance under five hours. A car, containing the represents" tivesof the L.N.Z.W., Messrs Melville Ford, 3. E. Fitzgerald, and F. W. Fowler; also Mr A. Hepburn, of the Dunlop- Rubber Company, will follow the rider to judge and officially record the performance, and the result is awaited with interest.
