CHKISTCBUKCH, Last Night. 'lhe New Zealand Cup meeting opened at Riccartcn to-day, in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance, including Lord and Lady Islington and suite? Hon. J. Carroll and several members of Parliament.
Ihe course was in excellent order, though a trifle hard for tender-legged horses. ihe racing generally wa3 interesting, and the win of Bridge in the Cup was very popular. The time established a new Autralasian reIt ord, be ! ng two secondi faster than Tartan's record of 3min. 27secs. 1 Speculation was brisk, the investments totalling £27,472, as against £24,943 last year. Eighteen bookmakers were licensed at £2O 10s each, and thirty five at £lO 10s each. Following are the results:— Spring Hurdles Handicap, of 250 sovs; 2 J miles. -Reumac, 10.9, 1; Coy, 10.0. 2; Kingman, ( J.O 3. Also started—Aorangi, Xavier, Gold Bird, Hjdrant, Stone Ginger, Southern Cress, and Milo. Won comfortably by two lengths. Time 3min 52 2.5 recs. Stone Ginger Gold Bird and Milo fell, and Xavier lost his rider. Spring Plate of 300 sovs; 1 mile. -Dearest, 7.2, 1; Birkdale, 7.7, 2; Vice Admiral, 7.7, 3. Also started Cullinan, Coroniform. True Knight, Mumura, Domino, Kilo3ter, Pilgrims' VVar, Coleen Mary and Flambeau. Dearest was the quickest to begin, and led all the way, winning by a length. Vice Admiral was a neck behind Birkdale. Cronstadt made all the running, but at the mile post was joined by Los Angeles, who shortly afterwards took charge, and led into the straight.
