The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture, was a visitor to the Palmerston Show yesterday. Mr A. McFarlane, of Pahiatua, has been elected President of the Ayrshire Cattle Breeders' Association. The friends of Mrs Inder, wife of Mr S. Inder, postmaster at Masterton, will be pleased to hear that she is recovering from her recent severe illness. Mr G. R. Sykes, secretary of the Masterton A* and P. Association, was a visitor to the Palmerston North Show this week, where lie received most satisfactory promises of support for the Solway Show, from breeders from all parts of the Island. Sir John Logan Campbell, the "Father of Auckland," celebrated his 94th birthday on Thursday, when he received congratulations of ntimerous callers, and also the felicitations and good wishes of many correspondents who forwarded telegraphic messages from all parts of the Dominion. . Word has been received in the Empire City that Mr Kenneth Glover, fourth son of Mrs Glover. Eaton, L.R.A.M., late of Wellington, and a brother of.Mr J. Irving Glover, Mus. B;ie.,' has recently been appointed bandmaster of the 2nd Welsh Regiment. , ' "' Mr F. Griffiths, who is leaving the employ of Messrs C. E. Daniel], Ltd., of Masterton, to take up a position in Napier, was entertained on Thursday afternoon by the members of the Huia Ladies' Hockey Club, to whom he had rendered valuable service during the past season, and presented with a handsomely-framed photograph of the team. ; Mr Robert E. Smith, a builder of long standing ia Wellington, died at . his residence in James Street, Killrirnie, on Thursday, aged 68. The deceased was born in Hobart, and after learning his trade he came to Christchurch, where he remained for a few months. He then settled in Wellington, and for the past 42 years he has followed his trade in this district. The death is announced of Mr John Arthur Perry, which took place at Mangatarata Station, Tokoinaru Bay, on the East Coast. . He had recently recovered from a critical illness which had left him very weak. On the evening of his death, he was sitting chatting with a friend, when, without any warning, he closed his eyes and fell baeltAvards and expired in a few minutes. Another of the pioneer settlers of the Dominion, in the person of Mr John Burridge, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. Irskinc, at Carterton yesterday. The deceased, who had been ailing for some time, had attained the ripe age of eighty years, at the time of his demise. His, wife pre-deccased him some years ago, at Petone. He leaves a large family of sons and daughters, amongst whom are Mr W. Burridge, of Carterton, and Messrs S. and H. Burridge, of Petone. Mr Francis Whiteman, a very old and much respected resident of the Hutt Valley, died at Mungaroa on Wednesday under most pathetic circumstances. Deceased was returning home from Akatarawa on Tuesday evening to attend his daughter's wedding, which was to have taken place on the following day, when he was seized with a paralytic fit and fell from his horse. He was picked up in an unconscious condition, and died a few hours later. Deceased was 59 vears of age, and was a son of the late Air George Whiteman, one of the pioneer settlers of the Hutt Valley. His brother, Mr John Whiteman,'is chairman of the Hutt County Council. Advice has been received by cable that Dr R. Ingrain .Sutton, son of Mr F. H. Sutton, of Masterton, has taken his L.D.S. degree at Edinburgh, and will be returning to New Zealand to practice dentistry. The career of Dr Sutton has been a particularly brilliant one. Having gained a scholarship at the Masterton Public School, he studied for two years in Wellington College, after which he proceeded to America, where, in three years, he took the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery at the Pennsylvania University. He subsequently proceeded to Edinburgh, where he lias now passed the final examination.
