FIRE LOSSES.

In the course of his address in Masterton yesterday, Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., quoted certain figures from the returns of Fire Boards, from which the inference would be drawn that the total fire losses - in the Dominion last year, excluding Wellington, amounted only to about £120,000. Mr Hogg's figures, it should be pointed out, relate to Fire Board districts only. As a matter of fact the total fire loss in the Dominion last year was over £420,*000. This represents, approximately, 9s per head for the whole of the, population. This is by 110 means a creditable position for the Dominion to occupy. Indeed, the returns show that the losses from fire in New Zealand during recent, years have been higher than those of any country in the world. The losses in Europe average from Is lOd to 3s 6d per head, whilst those of the United Kingdom are about 2s 6d. As Mr Hogg- pointed out, "the incendiary rat has a penchant for lueifer matches" in this Dominion.
