TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.")
The present favourites for the New Zealand Cup are Bridge, LO3 Angeles, Ingoda, and Diabolo, while for the Stewards' Handicap, Boanerges, Bliss, Equitas, and Perle d'Or are in most request. Good track jvork has been witnessed at Riccarton during the past week, and among the candidates that have done convincing gallops may be mentioned Ingodu, Los Angelos, Sandstream, Meriiwa, Kopu, Birkaale, Formless, Formby, Equita3, Boanerges, Martist, and Scotch f laid.
Since the Gaming Act has precluded the publication of dividends paid out on winners, and the actual amounts invested per medium of the totalisator on the other starters an opening has been made for inconsistent running, which now takes place on many racecourse?. Cases have often been known where a very lightly supported horse in the betting has run well back at a meeting, and a few days later, when well backed, has come to light and won somewhat easily. Through the nonpublication of the betting odds stewards are not in the position of watching the racing indications so closely as before, consequently cannot so easily cope with one of the abuses of the turf.
The weights for the Taratahi-Car-terton meeting made their appearance up to time, having been sent to the Club by the handicapper, Mr Uiic Shannon, immediately after the racing at Opaki on Saturday. On recent form the apportionments for the Belvedere Hack appear to be equitable. -In the Railway Handicap, Full Rate is asked to concede Sunbonnet 21bs. The latter beat The Officer gelding rather easily at Opaki on Saturday at a difference of 221bs, so should again account for him. Thetis, 7st 41bs, may be considered well treated. Uemora, Bst 41bs; Rauparaha, 7st lulbs; Strath -\ moira,7et 31bs; Ambrosian, 7st, read well in the County Cup. At first glance First Consul, 9st ' 51bs, appears to be given quite sufficient weight, but with the exception of Hilarian at 21bs higher, the company is not very select. Ihe opportionments for the Gladstone Welter have been well thought out. The response of owners and trainers on acceptance day should be a'very satisfactory one, and it would not he surprising to find at least 90 per cent, of the horses accepted for. The Clareville course is in excellent order, and some of the fast times recorded at Opaki may be at least equalled on November atti. WAIKARAI'A RACING CLUB. The programme for the Wairarapa Racing Club's summer meeting to be held at the popular Tauherenikau course on January 2nd and 3rd shows that the sum of £1875 will be given in stake money, with £325 for the Cup, £2OO for the, Racing Club's Handicap, £llO for the Nursery Handicap, and amounts ranging from £BO to £llO for hack and open events, the prize money should attract owners from many outside districls, while the Wairarapa trained horses are sure to be freely entered. The new course made last season is now properly set, and having been well attended to during the winter, it will not be at all surprising if exceptionally fast times be recorded at the coming meeting. The Glub'a course is now eo well and favourably known, and the general arangements in connection with race meetings so capably managed, that leadingowners of the Dominion patronise the Tauherenikau fixtures. It will be remembered that last New Year's Day the Tuhitarata Handicap was won by the brilliant Boanerges, the present fav write for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, white the Cup went to Messrs W. G. and G. L. Stead's English bred mare Ringdove. The racing public aro always ready to attend meetings where a fair percentage of high-class horses are engaged, and as such are generally in evidence at the Tauherenikau gatherings the Club has attained a prominence worthy of an old-established and progressive institution.
