THE COUNTRY'S FINANCES.
The announcement made on Friday to the House of- Representatives by the Prime Minister, concerning the finances of the country, is "highly gratifying. In the three great Departments of State—Customs, Railways, and Stamps—there have been substantial increases during the past seven months. This is a sure sign that the country is emerging from the period of depression through which it has passed during the last few years. At the same time it should cause the Dominion Treasurer to hesitate before he imposes further taxation, which can only tend to extravagance. When the finances are buoyant, there is always a disposition to lavish money, and it is to be feared that, with the increases in ordinary revenue and the huge loans which are in •eontempnition, to say nothing of the accretion from income tax, the temptation to spend' will be irresistible. The elections are coming, and the loaves and fishes are to be distributed. Posterity may go hang!
