DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED.

THE PHILLIPS MURDER CASE

Received Last Night P. 40 o'clock. SYDNEY, October 25.

Cabinet has considered the caae of a man named Phillips, who murdered hia child near Sydney in April, and has decided that, though the crime was a revolting one, to commute the sentence to imprisonment for life. It was also decided that the Cabinet take steps to see that he •was never released. It was held that the crime was not premeditated, and that the death" penalty was unlikely to deter other criminals who were likely to commit similar offences in moments cf excitement.
