MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The montMy meeting of the Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening there were present-r-The Mayor, M.r. J. M Coradine, and Crs J. H. Fauiing, Ja«. Flliott, F. W Temple, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington An. apolcgy for absence was received from Cr .Hoar.

Recounts amounting to £442 16s 7d on the general account, and £378 8s 6d on the Gas Account, were authorised for payment. Cr Temple, in referring to an item on the accounts, purchase of some water pipes for the mains, stated that he would like to see fortnightly reports made of works proposed to be undertaken and works done, and that before any large purchases were made, the matter to be brought before the Council. He was not reflecting on the Engineer, but the Council seemed to be getting into a lax method of doing business. Cr Ewington agreed with the previous speaker. 'lhe Engineer stated that he could not carry on work without material. If there was anything to report on he always did eo. Cr Pauling stated that the Council should have confidence in their Engineer in such matters. Referring to the expenditure on street maintenance, the Engineer stated that this had been done in spite of his warning to the Council. The Council, however had instructed him to carry out certain works not provided for in the estimates.
