DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.).

MAURICEVILLE.

Residents of the district are reminded of the concert and dance to be held in the hall this evening. The school library requires replenishing, and the entertainment has this object in view. A good evening's enjoyment can be looked for, and parents would do well to roll up, if only for the sake of the youngsters. The following members will represent Mauricoville Cricket Club against Opaki on the Masterton School ground on Saturday:—L. Bradstock, L. Brooks, G. Blackmore, G. Braggius, J. Barnett, F. Coombs, 13. Nigthingale, 11. Mayr, H. Hopley, W. Martin, W. Fisher (captain), Emergencies: F. Newman, M. O'Brien, E. Mattson. PAH2ATUA. The concert held In the Mangahao J Schoolroom last evening was a great success, the building being packed. The Forty-Mile Bush Athletic Society has voted its handicapper, Mr. 11. A. Williams, a sum of £2 2s. Mr. Or. de S. Baylis, of the Agri- ' cultural Department, was on a visit to Pahiatua yesterday, and in company with the secretary of the Pahiatua Central Branch of the New Zea-' land Farmers' Union (Mr. J. A. Walsh) and Mr. W. Tosswill, inspected several pieces of land where it is proposed to conduct agricultural experiments. Talk about cow tests: Mr. E. S. Holdaway, of Ballance, informed the writer yesterday that the dam of the well-known Jersey bull Fairy Campanile, which he has just purchased from Mr. J. A. M'Crea, of Stony Creek, for the sum of sixty guineas, ga,vc, after being six months in milk, 861b. of milk, with (hold your breach!) the remarkable test of 8.6. The Bank of New Zealand are about to establish a branch at Pongaroa.

TINU I. Shearing is about to start on several stations here, and no doubt everything will run on smoothly. It is rather amusing how the Shearers' and Farmers' Union have got mixed up. Many farmers belonging to the Farmers' Union are members of the Shearers' Union. One young settler is a member of both unions, so in case of a strike it will be interesting to watch the proceedings. Influenza is still claiming its victims in these parts.

CARTERTON. At St. Andrews' Presbyterian Church, yesterday afternoon, Mr R. J. Gayfer, only son of Mr and Mrs C. H. Gayfer, of Carterton, was married to Miss E. M. Woolley, youngest daughter of Mrs A. Woolley, of Blenheim. The bride was attired in a creme tailor-made costume, pink chiffon hat. relieved with green, and carried a handsome bouquet. Miss R. Carson was bridesmaid, k and MrW. A. McKenzie best man. The bridegroom's gift to the bridesmaid was a beautiful gold brooch set with amethyst. A reception was held at VVhyte's luncheon rooms, and the young couple left later on a motor trip North. The management of St. ftlark's Sunday School have decided to hold the annual picnic on December 22nd, and to give the prizes out the following Sunday. Several competitors from the Carterton Gun Club journeyed to the Hutt yesterday to |take part in a £25 clay bird handicap being fired there. Mr W. M. Halley has donated JSI to the funds of the local Brass Band.
