THE INCOME TAX.
The Government proposes a further increase in the tax upon incomes of over £4OO. No reason has yet been given for the increase, ;but it is reasonable to assume that it will be accompanied by a considerable decrease in the indirect taxation which is levied upon the ne«essaries of life, ! and which constitutes such a heavy burden upon the taxpayers of the . country. The only other assumption { is that the cost of administering the affairs of the country is being enormously increased, an admission that the Government would not be .likely to make, notwithstanding the charges made in connection with the new defence scheme. The electors of the ) Dominion will await with some anxiety the explanation of the Prime Minister of the causes which have to the proposed increases.
