THE BEET-SUGAR BILL.

Thcrv would appear to be very little hops, in view of the report of the Agricultural Committee of the House, of the Beet-Sugar Bill reaching the Statute Book this session. The object of the Bill was to subsidise the establishment of beet-sugar factories. The evidence would appear to have discouraged the belief that the manufacture of sugar from beet can be profitably undertaken in the Dominion. The probabilities are that the high price of labour was regarded as the stumbling block. In view of the fact that there are many who entertain the opinion that sugar-beet cultivation can be undertaken with profit, it might not be out of place to suggest that an experiment might be tried with the assistance of prison labour. This would, at anyrate, demonstrate how far the labour question would affect the industry.
