DISTRICT NEWS.
PAHIATUA. A meeting of the committee of the Pahiatua-Akiteo Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held in the office of the secretary (Mr. J. A. Walsh) last evening, when the programme, with the addition of a class for the best buggy pair, was unanimously adopted. The secretary reported that the following gentlemen had promised donations: —Mr. L. E. Hill, £2 25.; Mr. W. Tosswill, £'3 3s. ; Mr. T. P. Girdwoou, £2 2s. ; Mr. E. S. Holdaway, £1 Is. ; Mr. K. J. M'Lennan, 10s. (id. ; and Messrs. Charles Hill and Sons, Wellington, a trophy to the value of £2 2?: It was decided, in connection with the dairy cow competition, that the committee reserve mc right to submit any cow to a second test, and that any cow varying her test by twenty per cent, will be disqualified, unless some reason be given for the variation to the satisfaction of the committee. A concert, in aid of the Mangahao School funds, will bo held in the schoolroom, Mangahao, this evening. Mr. J. C. Cooper, who arrived in Pahiatua yesterday from Masterton, for the purpose of the Paliiatua/\kitio Agricultural and Pastoral Association, of which he is the president, had to return home hurriedly owing to the receipt of an urgent wire announcing a serious relapse of his little boy, who has been in a delicate state of liealtli foe some time. Mr. Cooper was unable to attend the meeting.
Captain J. B .Whyte, who has been on a visit to Auckland, returned to Pahiatua to-day. Mr. J. Osburne-Lilly has been nominated for the seat on the Borough Council, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr. J. B. Westlake. A largely-signed requisition was presented to Mr. J. B. Westlake this morning, asking that gentleman to allow himself to be again nominated for the vacant seat, and expressing regret that he found it necessary to sever his connection with the council, also commending him for his fearless and impartial criticism of borough finance, and his consistent adherence to principles of economy. The requisition represents over one hundred and sixty burgesses. Mr. Westlake has capitulated. The election, which is causing keen interest, will eventuate on November 2nd.
