DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents.) . '\ PAHIATUA. The sub-committee of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society met on Sat-an-clay evening last, and drew up a programme, which will be submitted to a general meeting of members to be held on the 22nd inst. Farmers in these parts are going in extensively for artificial manures, and in almost every instance with surprisingly good results. CARTERTON. _____ Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., has decided to invite Stonehenge Lodge, Masterton, to a card tourney after the conclusion of ordinary business at the next meeting. Bros. M'Kenzie, Fairbrother, and Wallis have been appointed to represent the lodge in arranging the card tournament social. A guinea has been voted to a distressed member of the Turanganui Lodge, (Jisborne. The Wairarapa Brisk, Tile, and Drain Pipe Company held their annual meeting yesterday, Mr. J. A. Di'/dSon presiding. Tho report and balance-sheet was adopted. Messrs. T. G. Underbill and A. H. Krahageri were re-elected directors, and Mr. J. A. Dudson chairman. The report showed the company to be on a thoroughly sound footing, and it was de- , cided to increase the staff and carry larger stock. It was decided at a meeting of the local School Committee to interview the* local dentists with regard to examination of the teeth of scholars, and in cases where it was necessary that the teeth required attention to report*to the parents. The Belvedere School Committee is going into the matter of erecting a miniature rifle range. The death is announced in Wellington of Mr J. H. Angove, who for many years was a oettler of Belvedere. Deceased was 59 years of age. On Saturday next the Tararua Tennis Club will play a Yankee tournament for combined doubles. The committee of the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon meeting have decided to have a recess from the middle of December to the middle of January. Mr J. T. M. Hornsby gave an address at the meeting on Sunday afternoon, when there was another large attendance.
TE WHARAU. Good showers of heavy rain fell here during the greater part of last week,, and the improvement in the country generally is already noticeable, to say nothing of the smiles on the fanners' faces, which of late have been bearing rather worried expressions. The metalling contracts on the different roads iu the district are'aleardy well and the new metal should be weil settled before next winter sets in. Mr. Kummer's new and commodidwelling at Kummerstein is now well under way, and given suitable weather should be completed very shortly. All those in this district who have had the "Sunlight" acetylene gas plants installed in their houses express themselves as highly pleased with the light. The Te Wharau Rifle Club are sending a strong team to compete at the Fairview meeting on Thursday. On most of the surrounding stations excellent percentages are reported. On Glen burn Station there has been • an exceptional lambing, many of the paddocks giving as much as 130 per cent., while the average percentage is well over the hundred. One little batch of eight ewes returned twenty-four lambs, all of which are doing well. Shearing operations commence in this district this week, and already every other topic has given way to the subject of the,"golden fleece," of which all hands seem to have an expert knowledge.
