TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.") I The correct weights for Rill and i Lol'u Possible in the Hying ?ack | Handicap at the Masterton meeting are 9.0 and 7.9 respectively. IViorae is scratched for her first day's engagement at the Masterton meeting, but may compete on the second day. Merric Rose went sore last weet, and has had to be eased in her work. Bobrikofl' will not be seen out at the WelJ'ngton meeting, consequently interest in the Champion Plate has somewhat lessened. Bally Shaunon will be ridden in his Trentham engagements by E. Tinker, the equine dentist. "Bridge will be ridden in the New Zealand Cup by H. Gray. Needless to state, The Possible—Scotia gelding will be well backed, if only on account of such a successful horseman having the mount. The next payment for the New Zealand Cup falls due on 21st instant. At the present time 47 remain in the big event, but it is estimated that the number will be reduced to 21 by Friday night's acceptances.
Conflicting reports are current relative to California. A private advice received in Carterton stated lie had broken down, and the Hawke's Bay Herald stated he had severely knocked himself, and was eased in his work for a couple of days. The latter statement is probably correct, : but it would appear that the horse's chance of competing in the New Zealand Cup is not at all bright. Inspection still remains in the Great Northern Guineas, and is expected to represent Mr. W. E. Bidwill in that event. Mr. T. Ray's' Merrie Land is improving rapidly since being thrown out of work consequent on an attack of influenza. The Merrie England horse should soon be in racing trim. The Wellington meeting opens today at Trentham, and excellent racing is confidently anticipated. Large fields will be seen out in all events, with the exception of the Selling ( Plate. The Rimutaka Hack will be fought out by one of the finest fields of so-called hacks seen out for some time. Class is especially well represented in this race by Morecombe, Poictiers, Directoire, Dearest, Turna, x'nspection, Merrie Frank, and Torpoint. Sprinters of exceptional merit are listed in the Shorts, of five furiongs, and include Penates, Provocation, Boanerges, Naumai, Multiple, and Theodore. Backers will probably have difficulty in. selecting the winner of the Steeplechase, in which this district may be represented by Oakley, Hill Lass, and Sylvia Mai'd. The Wellington Handicap should bring out a fine lot of. the: best handicap horses'in the Dominion. The contestants most fancied are Lady Medallist, Iramii, Sir Tristram, Kopu and Cullinan. In "the Wainui Handicap, one mile, there are no less than eight New Zealand Cup candidates, consequently the running in this race may be very interesting. A number of the country's high-class two-year-olds will be produced for the Wellesley Stakes, and the day's racing will conclude with the' Scurry Hack, of half a mile, in which there is a field of eighteen. As it cannot be known which of the contestants will move out from the barrier, the most rapidly, investors will be much puzzled in their endeavours to select the winner.
