PAHIATUA.
There will probably be two candidates in theffield for the extraordinary vacancy in the Borough Council, caused by the resignation of Cr. Westlake. Mr J. Osborne-Lilly and the gentleman who was responsible for'the vacancy, Mr J. B. Westlake. It will be remembered that the latter gentleman resigned at the last meeting of the Council as a protest against a motion which was carried adjourning the meeting for the purpose of allowing Councillors, who so desired, of attending the Anglican Mission. If these gentlemen definitely decide to place themselves in the hands of the electors the contest will, perhaps, be the keenest ever fought in the history of the Borough. Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, have fallen here continuously for the last few days, and at the time of writing show no sign of abatement.
A meeting of the Committee of the Pahiatua-Akitio Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held in the office of the secretary, Mr J. A. Walsh, on Tuesday next, when the programme as drafted ny the subcommittee will be submitted for aoption.
Mr W. A. McNaught, the wellknown wool expert, has written to the secretary of the Pahiatua Central Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr Walsh intimating his intention of visiting this district shortly and giving a demonstration of wool classing by his new invention—the wool-classing chart. By this invention IVJr McNaught cairns that every man will become his own classer without having to leave his home to attend a wool class, and it is so easy that a Doy of fourteen years can master it.
The Programme Committee of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society meet on Saturday evening.
